A statement by Danielle Smith issued by the Premier’s office for Alberta Day on Tuesday sparked controversy online.
The original statement, issued at 10 a.m., included a section recognizing Indigenous peoples’ contribution to history of the province.

“We recognize the Indigenous Peoples whose enduring connection to and stewardship of this land continues to shape Alberta. Over generations, people from many backgrounds have strengthened our communities through hard work, innovation, entrepreneurship and a shared belief in opportunity.”

Less than an hour later, a statement marked “updated” was sent out to media, however this time mention of Indigenous people had been removed.

“Generations of Albertans from many backgrounds have helped build our province through hard work, innovation and a shared belief in freedom. Their legacy can be seen in the strong communities, thriving industries and quality of life we enjoy today.”

The updated statement was several sentences longer than the first, and both were attributed to the premier herself.

When asked about the changes later in the day, Smith suggested it was not her doing and that she thought the original statement was fine.

“The Public Service posted one statement and then took it down and put up another one and I said, ‘Why don’t you just put up the original one?’ I thought it was fine. I’m not sure what exactly sure what happened with that glitch.”

Yonathan Sumamo, assistant deputy minister of Ministry Communications Services for the Government of Alberta, says the updated statement was an error.

“Earlier today, an updated version of the Premier’s statement on Alberta day was issued in error. The initial statement issued at 10 a.m. stands. We apologize for this error and any confusion it may have caused.”

Smith says she is excited to celebrate the many cultures that call Alberta home.

“We’re just excited to be able to celebrate Alberta Day and all of the various cultures and diaspora communities, including Indigenous peoples who have helped to build the province,” said Smith. “We want to celebrate everyone from every background and what they’ve been able to do to build this incredible province.”

10 a.m. version:

“On September 1, 1905, the Alberta Act came into effect, officially establishing the province of Alberta.

“Today, 121 years later, we celebrate everyone who calls Alberta home and the people, stories and cultures that continue to shape our province.

“We recognize the Indigenous Peoples whose enduring connection to and stewardship of this land continues to shape Alberta. Over generations, people from many backgrounds have strengthened our communities through hard work, innovation, entrepreneurship, and a shared belief in opportunity.

“Alberta Day celebrates our rich history, cultural heritage and community spirit. It is also a chance to recognize Alberta’s place within Canada, take pride in what we have built and look confidently to the future.

“Thank you to everyone who was a part of this year’s Alberta Day celebrations in Edmonton, Calgary and communities across the province. Your efforts brought Albertans together to celebrate what makes our province special.

“Happy Alberta Day and may our province forever remain strong and free.”

11 a.m. version:

“From the energy that powers our nation, to the food that feeds the world, to the entrepreneurs, workers and innovators who drive our economy forward, Alberta has always punched above its weight. We are a province of builders, dreamers and doers who refuse to settle for anything less than the best.

“With boundless opportunity, breathtaking landscapes and an independent spirit unlike anywhere else, Alberta is not just a great place to live, it is the greatest province in the greatest country in the world.
