Slave Lake’s Gilwood Golf Club is the site of a local qualifier in the RBC PGA Scramble community golf event. It’s on June 17th, and organizers are looking for participants.

“The competition is open to all golfers over the age of 19 who have a Golf Canada handicap,” says publicist Cole Crawford in an email to The Leader. “Registration closes on June 10 and will have a maximum of 30 teams (of four).”

Winners at the local events (34 of them in Alberta) go on to one of a dozen regional qualifier events held across the country later in the summer. Winners there advance to the national championship, to be held in Nova Scotia at Cabot Links Golf Course in October.

The Alberta North Regional Final is at Acheson on Aug. 30.

Something new this year is that two spots are available at each local event for advancing – one for lowest net score and the other for the team with the lowest gross score.

Gilwood manager Brian Johnstone says this isn’t the first time Gilwood has hosted an RBC PGA local qualifier. Two years ago, a team with local players Brent Blachford and Steve Gladue – along with a couple of guys from High Level – won and advanced to the regional event in Jasper. How it works, Johnstone says, is the club professional (him) becomes part of the team when they advance. He doesn’t play at the local event, but beefs up the squad that advances.

The nearest other local qualifiers this year are in Whitecourt, Barrhead and Westlock.

Registration is online, at rbcpgascramble.com. Johnstone, who can be reached at Gilwood at 780-849-4389, says he’s happy to answer any questions about it.
