Tournament boats ready for the start of a previous Angler’s Cup

The 2023 Anglers Cup walleye tournament is confirmed as a ‘go’ for 2023. It’ll be held on the usual third weekend of June – actually on Friday and Saturday, June 16 and 17, with the 18th reserved as an option in case of bad conditions.

Make that the Canadian Tire Anglers Cup, with that company back as the major sponsor.

According to the organizers, the tournament will again be partly a fundraiser, with the local curling club being a major beneficiary. The fire department will be volunteering again as well to run the event.

Assuming a full field of 100 boats, the top prize will be a hefty $33,000. Second place would be $13,000, with the numbers going down to 10th place. Various other prizes will also be on the line (big fish per day, for example). There’s also a $1,000 prize for the top mixed team.

The entry fee is $1,000 per boat.

“We welcome any business that would like to donate financially to this event,” says Angie Iverson, one of the organizing team members.

The fun gets started on Thursday, June 15 with registration at the curling club. The winners will be announced and receive their prizes at the same location, two nights later.

The Anglers Cup is a Western Canadian Walleye Trail event.

According to the organizers, over the past 10 years, the Anglers Cup has donated over $147,000 to the Slave Lake Volunteer Firefighters Society, and around $40,000 to other community groups.

In other walleye tournament news, the Anglers Cup has become part of a series of tournaments called the Master Walleye Series (MWS). It culminates in a championship event on June 24. The top 15 finishers in the three MWS events get to take part.
