The Drayton Valley and District Agricultural Society is hoping to round up a few more volunteers.

Colleen Schoeninger, the current treasurer and secretary of the board, says they are hoping that the fact that the Ag Society will be turning 50 next year will attract more people.

“It would be an interesting time to join because there is something on the horizon,” says Schoeninger.

Throughout their many years in the community, the Ag Society has been responsible for the weekly Farmers’ Market, as well as sponsoring the Rodeo Queen, acting as the facility sponsor for the 4-H achievement days, and helping with many other events in the community.

This year, they took home the award for the Not-For-Profit Organization of the year from the Drayton Valley and District Chamber of Commerce.

The current members have been around for many years, Schoeninger says. Some have other commitments they would like to give their time to, and others are just ready to step back and focus on their personal life instead.

Schoeninger says she is one of the people who are looking to step down. As well as being the treasurer, she is also the manager of the Farmers’ Market, and does some of the IT for the group. She says she also has a full-time job to support her family.

“I’d like to just do the Farmers’ Market managing and have some help with that because some of the assistants are also stepping down,” she says.

She says the group is hoping to find someone who has flexible hours and can be available more often.

“We need someone who is interested in being part of the community and helping out,” she says.

Currently there are three board positions to fill at the Annual General Meeting. The treasurer and secretary positions, each three year terms, are two of the openings, and Schoeninger says she will help train the volunteers who take over that position.

She says there are also some perks to joining the Ag Society. Members who put in volunteer hours are eligible to use their building for personal events, such as birthdays or meetings. They will also have opportunities to go to conferences, educational events, and training, which would all be covered by the Society.

The group is hosting their AGM on November 23 at 7 p.m. Individuals who are interested can join the group for a $1 membership fee between 6:30 and 7 p.m. Anyone who has questions about volunteering for the Ag Society can email Mike Kwirant, the current president, at
