The Board of Trustees held its annual organizational meeting prior to the regular meeting. Trustee Candy Nikipelo was re-elected by acclamation to a two-year term as board chair, and Trustee Anne Karczmarczyk was acclaimed to remain as vice-chair for a one-year term. Trustees were also appointed to various internal and external committees.

Human Resources update
Kim Carson, Associate Superintendent of Human Resources & Student Services, provided a human resources update.

Presently, Aspen View has 168.02 full-time equivalent teachers in classrooms — the highest number in the last three school years — as well as 143 support staff members.

Recruitment continues to fill both teaching and support staff vacancies.

Aspen View plans to participate in career fairs at at least four Alberta universities this year, to support teacher recruitment efforts.

Curriculum, assessment & professional development
Katherine Mann, Associate Superintendent of Curriculum & Technology, noted that the 2023-24 school year marks the mandatory implementation of new curriculum in K-3 Science and French Immersion Language Arts & Literature (FILAL); and Grades 4-6 English.

Language Arts & Literature and Math (ELAL)
Work is also continuing to support K-3 ELAL and Math, which was introduced last year.

Curriculum support is being provided through Tracy Lundell, Curriculum Coordinator.

Literacy and numeracy screens for Grade 1-9 students will take place throughout September, with supports in place to address areas of concern. Approximately 46 professional development sessions on a variety of topics are being provided to staff within the first two months of the school year.

Plant Operations & Maintenance project update
Secretary-Treasurer Amber Oko provided the Board of Trustees with an update on facilities projects completed at all schools over the summer, and commended Aspen View’s maintenance department for their hard work.
